The smell of warm coffee wafted around the small breakfast table as I pondered what the couple across from Matt and I had just said.  “Spend time together, quality time together…alone.”  Alice and Mike were celebrating their 20 year anniversary at Lambert’s Cove Inn in Martha’s Vineyard at the same time Matt and I were celebrating our 2 year anniversary.  Curiosity had gotten the better of me when I asked them a simple question.  “What makes your relationship work so well?”

Alice  and Mike explained that throughout the years, they had made time just for each other.  Not nights in watching television…no.  They had made the effort to go do things together, ride bikes, play tennis, and take trips.  “Our quality time became especially important when we had kids”, Mike explained.  We wanted to still make the effort to spend time alone, doing the things we both loved.  “This way, when the kids left, we would not only be looking forward to more quality time, we would be ready to take our next adventure!”, Alice exclaimed.

As Matt and I explored Martha’s Vineyard on our anniversary, we talked about all the things we liked to do together!  A few we came up with were taking naps, riding bikes, traveling, playing tennis, going to Yankees games, playing bocce ball on the beach, cruising on boats, watching movies, playing ping pong, going exploring with no GPS, looking at houses, listening to country music…the list could go on and on.  We vowed to make the effort, as the years go by, to spend quality time together.  We promised to continue to cultivate our friendship, and grow in our love!

For our two year anniversary, Matt and I are spending a few quality days together at Lambert’s Cove in Martha’s Vineyard.
